Head Wound City are a hardcore supergroup consisting of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato ofBlood Brothers, Nick Zinner fromYeah Yeah Yeahs, and Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian, both fromThe LocustandHoly Molar.Jordan does the singing. Gabe plays drums. Cody does guitar stuff. So does Nick. JP plays bass. Most everybody sings along. They’ve been in some of the bands that have burned out the backs of your eyeballs, Yeah Yeah Yeahing you into a jitter sex frenzy, Locusting your flesh down to bare white bones, and spurting Blood Brothers all over your clean white sheets. Such an awesome short lived band. They made one record, played one show and that was it. Get this record NOW!
Japanese screamo fused with ideas of progressive hardcore, metal, and post-rock instrumentals. Not much else to say about these guys except that they are brilliant. Get both of these albums now, you won't be disappointed if your into this kind of stuff.
Swing Kids were a hardcore band from San Diego California during the mid 1990s. The band members were Eric Allen (of Unbroken), Jose Palafox (of Struggle and Bread and Circuits), John Brady (of Spanakorzo and Sweep The Leg Johnny), Jimmy LaVelle (The Album Leaf) and frontman Justin Pearson (later of The Locust), who would release their recordings on his own Three One G record label. They were closely involved with and heavily influenced by the forerunners of the San Diego hardcore punk scene of the 1990s. I got the chance to catch these guys reunion show recently and was blown away. If you sadly haven't heard these guys get this discography asap!
Unruh was a hardcore band from Arizona. They formed in 1995, out of the ashes of short-lived crust thrash band Uruk’Hai. They took their name from notorious murderer Howard Unruh, who killed thirteen people in one day. Unruh was born into a scene that the members of the band considered to be stagnant and uninteresting. They wanted to play intense, violent hardcore - but more than anything they wanted to play music that was interesting and powerful. They played music that is hard to classify into hardcore’s many sub-sub-genres, but under pressure I’d call it death metal-influenced hardcore. Amazing band, if you haven't heard them get on it asap.
Joshua Fit For Battle was a prominent hardcore band based out of Newark, Delaware. Despite Joshua Fit For Battle’s effort to avoid categorization, both fans and critics often consider the band a product of the emotional hardcore uprise during the late 1990’s. Joshua Fit For Battle’s career spanned from 1998 to 2005, until the group disbanded. The band’s releases are still distributed by distinguished hardcore label Level Plane. Amazing band, if you haven't heard these guys yet, don't pass them up.
Awesome vegan straight edge metalcore band from North Carolina that started in the mid nineties and officially broke up in early 98.There’s a lot of metal going on, vocals are harsh and carry across lyrics of animal liberation and holding on to your goals. Recommended if you’re into classic good metalcore. Just recently discovered these guys and I'm really into it. Give these guys a listen.
So here we have Purple Mercy, still an active band I believe. I can't find any info on this band, but I'm pretty sure they're from Santa Cruz, CA. Purple Mercy play psychedelic punk / hardcore / sludge music. The first time I listened to this album was on shrooms. The trip was horrible, but the album sounded great. Check these guys out I'm pretty sure someone from Sabertooth Zombie is in this band, but they sound nothing like them.
Despise You is hands down one of the greatest powerviolence bands of all time, for me at least. In my top 10 bands. Despise You come from Inglewood, CA and sing about real shit. Death, drugs, skating, suicide, etc. What more could you ask for. California’s purest personification of hate, formed in 1995. The band utilises a dual vocal style with male & female vocals and a political edge similar to Man Is The Bastard or Capitalist Casualties. Grab both of these albums, give them a listen, then buy everything these guys have created. Support local artists, so they can keep making that music that you just can't help but bang your head to. Can't really find any detailed info on this band. Fast, awesome, shred. Just download it if your into heavy ass shit. This band fucking rules. Enough said.
The Nation Of Ulysses was a post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. Musically and stylistically, The Nation Of Ulysses had a tremendous influence on the underground punk rock and hardcore music scene in the early 90’s. Their music was noisy and manic, but they also had a strong free-jazz influence. The band was also notorious for their political pamphlets, called Ulysses Speaks, which they distributed at live shows, some of which are reproduced on their album covers. Their pamphlets espoused what they referred to as “The Ulysses Aesthetic” which was a mix of 60’s and 70’s radical politics, French Situationist writings, and juvenile delinquency. The group advocated a rejection of the 60’s and 70’s music and styling; rejecting drug use, and advocating that the punk youth dress nicely and sensibly. While this might seem to be a trivial point, it should be noted that not long after the Nation Of Ulysses toured the USA, the fashion sensibility of the post-hardcore scene, did indeed, change quite considerably, and this was a precursor to the thrift store chic fashion sensibility of the 90’s. AMAZING BAND, get into it.
Alpinist is a Dark-Hardcore/Crust four-piece band from Münster, GERMANY. They exist since winter 2006 and live from the experiences their members made playing in bands from death metal to punkrock. Alpinist is meant to be understood by those who are sick of people following musical trends, those who wanna live out music with dedication and those who believe in expressing their own ideals with their own art. Really awesome band, these guys are so good. Check them out.
Hewhocorrupts is a Chicago-based grindcore band most known for their songs mocking Metallica, making reference to the notorious allegations of the group having sold out. This jab of satire is carried through the entire band's style. Their own site refers to them as "Hewhocorrupts Megacorp.", and they appear in a costume of business suits and aviator sunglasses informally known as "hardcorporate". Members of the band were in the power violence/grindcore band Kungfu Rick and in Authority Abuse. I had the privledge of seeing these guys once in Indiana and they ruled. This is a collection of basically everything up to the point of it's release. Awesome grindcore, guns and roses covers, get this shit.
Hatred Surge is a power violence band from Austin, Texas. Alex Hughes, former bassist of Insect Warfare, is the founding member. The band started with Alex playing every instrument and it eventually turned into a full band. Every album they put out seems to go in a little different of a direction. They had a female vocalist until their last split with Mammoth Grinder where the old singer of Insect Warfare stepped in and took over the vocal duties. One of my all time favorite power violence bands. If your into PV and for some odd reason haven't heard these guys, get on it.
Arsen aka König Der Monster comes from Germany (out of Bremen and Versmold respectivly) and plays a metallic style of hardcore/screamo with a slight somewhat crusty influence. Their sound has a heavy and very dark edge, which might make you think of bands like Uranus coupled with some of the classic US crust bands like His Hero Is Gone and Tragedy along with some of the German metallic hardcore stuff. Really glad I found these guys, better late then never.
The San Francisco-based quintet Ludicra specialize in crustcore-influenced black metal with neoclassical tendencies. The group formed in 1999. Ludicra play semi-regularly in the San Francisco area, where they have built up a strong reputation based on their intense live shows. Again I'm not a huge black metal fan, but these guys have a style of their own and do it very well. Female vocalists in black metal bands seem to do it for me. Get all there stuff, start out with their first album, Hollow Psalms if you wanna try them out first.
Some Girls was a five-piece hardcore punk band from San Diego, active from 2002 to 2007, consisting of members from a variety of influential hardcore bands. Every album they made is a little different from the last, but they all are amazing. I had to chance to become good friends with all these guys and got to follow them around and film a bunch of their shows. If you never had the chance to see these guys live, I'm sorry, but you really missed out. Below are links to every album they made and a live video I filmed of them near the ending of their existence. One of my favorite bands of all time, these guys really hit the spot for me. Make sure to look up their lyrics as well, Wes Eisold has a way with words that I can't help but love.
