The Rapture

The Rapture are an American  band formed in San Francisco. The band mixes influences of , , , , , and more. These guys have left a huge impact on how I play music and deserve to be heard. I'm not a huge fan of their newer material, but I'm posting all my favorite past albums. Check these guys out.

Múm

Múm (pronounced [muːm], “moom”) is an experimental electronic group from Iceland whose music is characterized by soft vocals, eccentric beats and colorful effects, and a variety of traditional and unconventional instruments. The band was formed in 1997. Originally a duo, the band has expanded and contracted in the 12 years of being and has counted 15 - 20 people along the way. My girlfriend showed me this band and they blew me away. If your into Blonde Redhead, you'll probably dig Múm. Check these guys out, really interesting music. Warning you may feel the urge to shed a few tears, in a good way.

A Lily

James Vella, here working as the multi tasking lone personnel of A Lily, is also known for his work as guitarist/composer for the British post-classical/indie band yndi halda and as the owner of the O Rosa Records label. Very soothing & sweet, organic laptop-based music. Another one to just go outside, lay in the sun, close your eyes and zone out to. This album is in two parts, so make sure to get both.

Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada is an electronic music duo from Edinburgh, Scotland. Boards of Canada have had an enormous influence on the ,  and  scenes. They have frequently made reference to the warm, scratchy, artificial sounds of 1970s television. Indeed, the Sandison brothers admit to being inspired by the documentary films of the National Film Board of Canada, from which they take their name. Boards of Canada is an amazing band. Download everything find a peaceful place to sit, put on some good headphones, close your eyes, and sink deep into the sounds of Boards of Canada.

Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu is an  band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn. The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film “Tian yu” (a.k.a. “Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl”). Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of  Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Xiu Xiu is an aquired taste for most, but give it a chance. Read their lyrics and let Jamie touch your soul, then rip out your heart. Truly beautiful poetry as music.

Aphex Twin

Aphex Twin, born Richard David James, is an electronic music artist. He grew up in Cornwall, United Kingdom and started producing music around the age of 12. Richard has been hailed as “the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary  music” with his works ranging from  pieces to . I like a lot of his work, but the Come to Daddy EP takes the cake. Even if this kind of stuff doesn't sound appealing to you, give this one a chance.

Sozialistisches Patienten Kollektiv

Formed 1978 in Australia, was a 1980s  and  music act once featuring Graeme Revell who later went on to compose soundtracks for film and television, most notably the incidental music for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The group was formed when Revell (aka Operator) met up with Neil Hill (aka Ne/H/il). They were both working at a psychiatric hospital when they became inspired by the manifesto of the German radical Marxist group known as the Sozialistisches Patienten Kollektiv (SPK). SPK’s early music is best described as disturbing and psychologically disorienting, in line with their nihilistic, subversive philosophy. The project ideal is to express the content of various psycho-pathalogical conditions, especially schizophrenia, manic - depressive psychosis, mental retardation and paranoia. SPK is trying to be a voice for those individuals condemned to the slow decay of mental hospitals and chemical / electro / surgical therapy, without fetishising them into blatant entertainment product. NOISE.

Bowery Electric

Bowery Electric weave chilled downbeat dirges via hazy sheets of distorted guitar (that sound as though they were recorded underwater), stumbling sluggish percussion and benumbed male/female vocals. “For two people to be able to create such a huge, rolling epic sound is surprising; what really hits hard is just how huge it can be, how the inarguable and pulverising beauty of BE’s sound simply forces a slacked out crowd into its swell.” If you dig Portishead and shoegaze, check these guys out, you won't be disappointed. Go with Lush Life if you wanna just try them out, once you get that album I bet you'll get the rest as well.
