Bucket Full of Teeth

Formed in Early 2001 by Brad Wallace and Will Killingsworth, both former members of Orchid, Bucket Full of Teeth was conceived as a friendly venture in playing generic powerviolence but instantaneosly evolved into much more. The band quickly become more interested in pushing conventions of heavy music and punk rock. Having only played 6 shows ever, and primarily a studio project, Bucket Full of Teeth began work on new material in 2002. Fusing elements of Death Metal, Ambient, Psychedlic, Prog, Thrash and Stoner Rock into a cohesive whole much better serving the original musical thesis attempted in their early recordings. Self-Recorded and painstakingly edited and revised at Dead Air Studios over the past two years Bucket Full of Teeth have produced a collage of sonic destruction both heavy and unpredictable. The band has said this will be their final release but rumors of working on new material and live incarnations surface often.

AMAZING

A Silver Mt. Zion

Silver Mt. Zion (Thee Silver Mt. Zion, A Silver Mt. Zion or simply SMZ) use a number of different variations of the name on different releases. A Silver Mt. Zion is a band formed in 1999, in Montreal, Quebec, by Godspeed You! Black Emperormusicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. According to an interview with VPRO Radio in The Netherlands, originally the project was for Efrim to learn how to score music, but the idea was soon abandoned as Efrim decided that he preferred music not to be defined by rules, preferring simply what sounds best. Despite this, he continued the project out of a desire to experiment with ideas that would not work within the context of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Truly beautiful music, don't pass this one up.

ENJOY

Deerhunter

Deerhunter is a band which formed in 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia. The group began with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with a pinch of garage rock. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized, and have been referred to by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.” This band is hands down amazing. If you haven't check these guys out yet, do it!

A Lily

James Vella, here working as the multi tasking lone personnel of A Lily, is also known for his work as guitarist/composer for the British post-classical/indie band yndi halda and as the owner of the O Rosa Records label. Very soothing & sweet, organic laptop-based music. Another one to just go outside, lay in the sun, close your eyes and zone out to. This album is in two parts, so make sure to get both.

Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada is an electronic music duo from Edinburgh, Scotland. Boards of Canada have had an enormous influence on the ambient, downtempo and idm scenes. They have frequently made reference to the warm, scratchy, artificial sounds of 1970s television. Indeed, the Sandison brothers admit to being inspired by the documentary films of the National Film Board of Canada, from which they take their name. Boards of Canada is an amazing band. Download everything find a peaceful place to sit, put on some good headphones, close your eyes, and sink deep into the sounds of Boards of Canada.

Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu is an experimental band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn. The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film “Tian yu” (a.k.a. “Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl”). Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Xiu Xiu is an aquired taste for most, but give it a chance. Read their lyrics and let Jamie touch your soul, then rip out your heart. Truly beautiful poetry as music.

Aphex Twin

Aphex Twin, born Richard David James, is an electronic music artist. He grew up in Cornwall, United Kingdom and started producing music around the age of 12. Richard has been hailed as “the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary electronic music” with his works ranging from ambient pieces to acid techno. I like a lot of his work, but the Come to Daddy EP takes the cake. Even if this kind of stuff doesn't sound appealing to you, give this one a chance.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

The Brian Jonestown Massacre was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The band has had over 40 members since then, but its driving force and main songwriter is Anton Newcombe. Their sound is heavily influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the 1960s, but also carries influences from shoegaze, jangle pop, garage rock, and lo-fi sonorities. Over its decade-long history, the band has undergone a large number of personnel changes. Multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter Anton Newcombe is the only member who has stayed with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning. This is one of my favorite bands of all time. They make some of the greatest music that has ever graced my ears and no matter how many times I listen to them it just never gets old to me. Last year I got the chance to see them live in Los Angeles and they played over two hours of what became one of the greatest shows of my life. I have laughed, I have cried, I have felt numb and so much more to this brilliant band. Do yourself a favor and pleasure your ears with what some like to call the BJM, love. They have so many albums/singles/ep's, so if you want them all then dig around yourself, but here are all my favorites.

Working with orchestrated arrangements, the nine-piece group created tracks with wide dynamic ranges, a highly evocative use of instrumentation and sounds and uncompromising long form compositions. Their engrossing use of art and visuals in both album packaging and live performances creates an enigmatic aura. Beautiful music.
