Head Wound City

Head Wound City are a hardcore supergroup consisting of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of Blood Brothers, Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian, both from The Locust and Holy Molar. Jordan does the singing. Gabe plays drums. Cody does guitar stuff. So does Nick. JP plays bass. Most everybody sings along. They’ve been in some of the bands that have burned out the backs of your eyeballs, Yeah Yeah Yeahing you into a jitter sex frenzy, Locusting your flesh down to bare white bones, and spurting Blood Brothers all over your clean white sheets. Such an awesome short lived band. They made one record, played one show and that was it. Get this record NOW!

The Rapture

The Rapture are an American  band formed in San Francisco. The band mixes influences of , , , , , and more. These guys have left a huge impact on how I play music and deserve to be heard. I'm not a huge fan of their newer material, but I'm posting all my favorite past albums. Check these guys out.

Year Future

YEAR FUTURE was founded in early 2003 in Los Angeles. Originally comprised of vocalist Sonny Kay (THE VSS, ANGEL HAIR), guitarist Rockey Crane (DEAD AND GONE, CREEPS ON CANDY), bassist Sam Ott (THE FUCKING ANGELS) and drummer Jim Andersen (of THE PATTERN, TALK IS POISON), the band’s new lineup now includes bassist Pete Lyman (ex-LIVING SCIENCE FOUNDATION) and drummer Chris Hathwell (also a member of the band MOVING UNITS). Really good threeoneg related band. Hard to describe, just check them out.

CHECK IT OUT

Musica Elettronica Viva

Musica Elettronica Viva could not be easily defined as one band. Instead, MEV was closer to a movement based around the idea of free improvisation in the form of experimental, electronic jazz. In the early ’70s, there were three different (but related) bands that went by the name: one in New York that included Richard Teitelbaum and Frederic Rzewski; one in Paris, led by Patricia and Ivan Coaquette (before his Spacecraft days); and one in Rome, founded by Alvin Curran. They were early experimenters with the use of synthesizers to transform sounds. They also used such “non-musical” objects as amplified panes of glass and olive oil cans, and their performances achieved notoriety in Italy for their ability to generate riots. Really good noise, check this stuff out if your into that kinda stuff.

Bucket Full of Teeth

Formed in Early 2001 by Brad Wallace and Will Killingsworth, both former members of Orchid, Bucket Full of Teeth was conceived as a friendly venture in playing generic powerviolence but instantaneosly evolved into much more. The band quickly become more interested in pushing conventions of heavy music and punk rock. Having only played 6 shows ever, and primarily a studio project, Bucket Full of Teeth began work on new material in 2002. Fusing elements of Death Metal, Ambient, Psychedlic, Prog, Thrash and Stoner Rock into a cohesive whole much better serving the original musical thesis attempted in their early recordings. Self-Recorded and painstakingly edited and revised at Dead Air Studios over the past two years Bucket Full of Teeth have produced a collage of sonic destruction both heavy and unpredictable. The band has said this will be their final release but rumors of working on new material and live incarnations surface often.

A Silver Mt. Zion

Silver Mt. Zion (Thee Silver Mt. Zion, A Silver Mt. Zion or simply SMZ) use a number of different variations of the name on different releases. A Silver Mt. Zion is a band formed in 1999, in Montreal, Quebec, by Godspeed You! Black Emperormusicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. According to an interview with VPRO Radio in The Netherlands, originally the project was for Efrim to learn how to score music, but the idea was soon abandoned as Efrim decided that he preferred music not to be defined by rules, preferring simply what sounds best. Despite this, he continued the project out of a desire to experiment with ideas that would not work within the context of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Truly beautiful music, don't pass this one up.

Deerhunter

Deerhunter is a band which formed in 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia. The group began with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by  and  music with a pinch of . The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized, and have been referred to by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.” This band is hands down amazing. If you haven't check these guys out yet, do it!

TUNE IN

This Mess

This Mess was one of my old bands back when I was about 16 years young. We got to play with the likes of Kill Me Tomorrow, The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, No Age, Mika Miko, Abe Vigoda and many more. We got to be a part of the whole " smell scene, " which was putting out a ton of awesome bands back in the good old days. Back when this band was around, music was at a peak that seems unreachable these days. We played experimental " dance punk, " and broke up for basically no reason, right when we were really starting to get noticed. This is our EP titled The Secret it Out. 5 songs of sassy " dance punk, " as people liked to call us. Give it a listen, you might end up digging it.

Múm

Múm (pronounced [muːm], “moom”) is an experimental electronic group from Iceland whose music is characterized by soft vocals, eccentric beats and colorful effects, and a variety of traditional and unconventional instruments. The band was formed in 1997. Originally a duo, the band has expanded and contracted in the 12 years of being and has counted 15 - 20 people along the way. My girlfriend showed me this band and they blew me away. If your into Blonde Redhead, you'll probably dig Múm. Check these guys out, really interesting music. Warning you may feel the urge to shed a few tears, in a good way.

Upsilon Acrux

Take the weirdest of Discipline-era King Crimson, multiply it by 100, and then remove any and all sense of apparent melody. You’ll have something that might resemble Upsilon Acrux, whose music at one time or another has been referred to as “brutal prog”. Hailing from Los Angeles, and originating in Vista, CA, this group has gone through well over 10 members and several line-ups, including everything from a 2-piece to over 5. Genius, amazing instrumental music. Get this immediately.

A Lily

James Vella, here working as the multi tasking lone personnel of A Lily, is also known for his work as guitarist/composer for the British post-classical/indie band yndi halda and as the owner of the O Rosa Records label. Very soothing & sweet, organic laptop-based music. Another one to just go outside, lay in the sun, close your eyes and zone out to. This album is in two parts, so make sure to get both.

Art Ensemble of Chicago

The Art Ensemble of Chicago is an  ensemble closely identified with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the mid 1960s. The group continues to tour and record through 2006, despite the deaths of two of the founding members. The Art Ensemble embodied the AACM motto “Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future” with their use of costumes and face paint in performance plus the adventurous improvisation, the use of folk music and instruments, swing, and a variety of musical expression that made them hard to pin down to a specific genre. The listener is engaged by the Ensemble’s multi-instrumentalism, especially the use of what they term “little instruments” in addition to the traditional  lineup; “little instruments” can include bicycle horns, bells, birthday party noisemakers, wind chimes, and a vast array of percussion instruments (including found objects). Truly beautifully played jazz.

I Am Above On The Left

I Am Above On The Left is an  quartet established in Moscow, Russia in Autumn 2004, and soon became one of the most welcomed experimental rock-act of a new local music scene. The band plays loud and noisy, mostly instrumental music, blending influences of art-jazz-nova-hardcore, pop-noise, math-rock, and avant-garde. The young musicians say that their efforts are devoted to “rethinking themselves at every single moment of time." These guys do what they do very well, give these guys a listen.

Ghastly City Sleep

Ghastly City Sleep combine the finest elements of shoegaze and ambience along with an acute penchant for melody to create an absolutely stunning array of material. The four young men involved in Ghastly City Sleep don’t keep to one instrument long, as the entire collective can be found playing everything from guitars, keys, various percussion and just about everything in between. The group was formed, back in 2005 after transplanting from Richmond, VA to Brooklyn, NY, with current & former members of City of Caterpillar, Gregor Samsa, and Majority Rule. Sadly I missed these guys when they played in Los Angeles, but I love their music, give them a listen.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

The Brian Jonestown Massacre was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The band has had over 40 members since then, but its driving force and main songwriter is Anton Newcombe. Their sound is heavily influenced by the  sounds of the 1960s, but also carries influences from , , , and  sonorities. Over its decade-long history, the band has undergone a large number of personnel changes. Multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter Anton Newcombe is the only member who has stayed with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning. This is one of my favorite bands of all time. They make some of the greatest music that has ever graced my ears and no matter how many times I listen to them it just never gets old to me. Last year I got the chance to see them live in Los Angeles and they played over two hours of what became one of the greatest shows of my life. I have laughed, I have cried, I have felt numb and so much more to this brilliant band. Do yourself a favor and pleasure your ears with what some like to call the BJM, love. They have so many albums/singles/ep's, so if you want them all then dig around yourself, but here are all my favorites.
