Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead is an  band originating from New York City in the early 1990s. It was formed by Kazu Makino, Maki Takahashi and Milan-born Italian twin brothers Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace. They take their name from a song by DNA, a 70s and 80s no-wave band from New York. Blonde Redhead caught the attention of Sonic Youth’s drummer, Steve Shelley, who produced their first self titled album in 1993. Shortly afterwards Maki Takahashi left the band and the remaining band members continued as a trio. Such an amazing band, if you haven't checked these guys out by now I feel sorry for your ears. Get all of these albums now.

AMAZING

Swing Kids

Swing Kids were a hardcore band from San Diego California during the mid 1990s. The band members were Eric Allen (of Unbroken), Jose Palafox (of Struggle and Bread and Circuits), John Brady (of Spanakorzo and Sweep The Leg Johnny), Jimmy LaVelle (The Album Leaf) and frontman Justin Pearson (later of The Locust), who would release their recordings on his own Three One G record label. They were closely involved with and heavily influenced by the forerunners of the San Diego hardcore punk scene of the 1990s. I got the chance to catch these guys reunion show recently and was blown away. If you sadly haven't heard these guys get this discography asap!

Starflyer 59

Starflyer 59 is a  band from Riverside, CA founded in 1993 by Jason Martin, brother of Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric. While Martin has written all of Starflyer 59’s songs, the band has included a number of different musicians over the years, including Jeff Cloud, Richard Swift, Frank Lenz and Josh Dooley. Starflyer 59 was signed to Tooth & Nail Records, their original and current label, after Jason Martin gave a demo to Brandon Ebel when the two met at a music festival in 1993. Shortly afterwards, Ebel contacted Martin and offered him a record contract. Great shoegaze band. They have a ton of albums that you should check out, but I'm gonna post my all time favorite.

Joshua Fit For Battle

Joshua Fit For Battle was a prominent hardcore band based out of Newark, Delaware. Despite Joshua Fit For Battle’s effort to avoid categorization, both fans and critics often consider the band a product of the emotional hardcore uprise during the late 1990’s. Joshua Fit For Battle’s career spanned from 1998 to 2005, until the group disbanded. The band’s releases are still distributed by distinguished hardcore label Level Plane. Amazing band, if you haven't heard these guys yet, don't pass them up.

Day of Suffering

Awesome vegan straight edge metalcore band from North Carolina that started in the mid nineties and officially broke up in early 98. There’s a lot of metal going on, vocals are harsh and carry across lyrics of animal liberation and holding on to your goals. Recommended if you’re into classic good metalcore. Just recently discovered these guys and I'm really into it. Give these guys a listen.

The Khayembii Communique

The Khayembii Communiqué was an underground  / screamo band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Although a trio, they manage to be more eminent than other hardcore / screamo bands. An ordinary song consists of the singer-guitarist, Mark Shaw screaming his emotions out while strumming furiously at his guitar and singer-bass player Brian Wilcox, utualizing the concept of the song with poppy bass lines and calm singing. They performed with bands such as Saetia and You & I in local basements and house shows. This is a truly amazing band. If you haven't heard these guys do yourself a huge favor and download this discography immediately.

AMAZING SONG
i'm trying too hard to forget to just be me.
forgetting to forget the imagined audience.
who i wish would understand me,
yet never know me.
because i can't bear to show what i don't know.
this is why i discuss trivialities.
this is why i seem so strong.
because my shell won't be cracked if i make sure you never find out how to.
yet i want to open up.
i want to see who i am.
i want to see.
but it terrifies me to think that maybe you love me for what i say and not who i am.
My politics just aren't me;
just another wall between you and i.
The select few who've seen through the facade,
i pushed away in horror.

afraid of what they knew.
i withheld so much about myself to keep a fucked-up advantage
and now i see i never had anything to gain.
so now there's no more trying to "Just be me".
no more hiding behind a language. just expose myself for what i've been;
a fraud,
cashing in on rhetoric
that i learned to abuse,
what i used to push you away.
that i used to win even though.. every single time i lost.
every single time.

Gang Starr

Gang Starr was an influential American  duo, composed of late rapper Guru (Backronym for Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, real name Keith Elam) and DJ Premier (real name Chris Martin). Premier originally from Houston and Guru from Boston, but they are now based in and represent Brooklyn, New York, epitomizing the New York City hip-hop sound. This is some of the best hip hop out there. If for some odd reason you've never listened to Gang Starr then do yourself a favor and get both these albums ASAP! R.I.P. GURU!

The Nation of Ulysses

The Nation Of Ulysses was a post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. Musically and stylistically, The Nation Of Ulysses had a tremendous influence on the underground punk rock and hardcore music scene in the early 90’s. Their music was noisy and manic, but they also had a strong free-jazz influence. The band was also notorious for their political pamphlets, called Ulysses Speaks, which they distributed at live shows, some of which are reproduced on their album covers. Their pamphlets espoused what they referred to as “The Ulysses Aesthetic” which was a mix of 60’s and 70’s radical politics, French Situationist writings, and juvenile delinquency. The group advocated a rejection of the 60’s and 70’s music and styling; rejecting drug use, and advocating that the punk youth dress nicely and sensibly. While this might seem to be a trivial point, it should be noted that not long after the Nation Of Ulysses toured the USA, the fashion sensibility of the post-hardcore scene, did indeed, change quite considerably, and this was a precursor to the thrift store chic fashion sensibility of the 90’s. AMAZING BAND, get into it.

The Verve

The Verve (originally Verve) is an English  band. The band was formed in 1989 at Winstanley College, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, by vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. The Verve was psychedelic music indebted to  and r music before them. I remember hearing Bittersweet Symphony when I was like 5 years old driving around with my uncle, brings back so many good memories of when life was so much easier. Do yourself a favor, get these albums, feel a little nostalgic.

Saetia

Saetia was a  band from New York City that formed in early 1997. Their first show was at ABC No Rio to about thirty people. Two and a half years, 17 songs, numerous tours and four bass players later, Saetia played their final show at ABC No Rio to forty people. One of the greatest screamo bands of all time, these guys set the foundation for bands to come. If you've never heard these guys, crawl out of your shell and give them a chance. If you dig awesome 90's screamo I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The Cranberries

The Cranberries are an  band from Limerick, Ireland that formed in 1989 and rose to mainstream popularity in the early 1990’s. Combining the melodic jangle of post-The Smiths indie pop with the lilting, trance-inducing sonic textures of late-80s  and adding a slight Celtic tint, The Cranberries became one of the more successful groups to emerge from the pre-Britpop UK indie scene of the early 90s. Such an amazing band. Do yourself a favor, get this greatest hits album.

Slowdive

Slowdive was a  /  band formed in 1989, lasting until 1995. The band was formed in Reading, Berkshire, England and signed to Creation Records in the UK. The band’s sound was influenced by the Cocteau Twins and Creation label mates My Bloody Valentine, featuring heavy use of guitar effects and muted vocals. This is one of my all time favorite bands. It seems everyone I know only has Souvlaki, which is an amazing album, but all their other material is amazing as well. Do yourself a favor and download everything by this wonderful band.
