Fronted by guitarist/vocalistMatt Hollywood, the former co-songwriter and co-founder ofThe Brian Jonestown Massacre, fans of mid-’60s Kinks, Stones, and Byrds will fall in love with The Out Crowd’s edgy and infectious pop sound, heightened byDandy Warhols’ producer Gregg Willliams’ immaculate production. The Big Takeover raves: “Portland, OR’s Out Crowd makes music that reaches for the sky, going for those heavenly ideas just out of reach.Building off the great Psych foundations of LA pop, (Byrds, Love, Rain Parade,) one moment and a Stonesy Velvets base the next, they push themselves to the creative max, with a sound that is always clean and aggressive. But don’t think its urgent-style Punk, instead its Rock from a bunch who remain in control even as they go for broke. Really cool stuff check this out.
Sonic Youth is an influentialexperimental rockband which formed in New York City, New York, United States in 1981. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals, guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Steve Shelley (drums) and Mark Ibold (bass). In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. One of the greatest bands of all time, I'm sure you've heard of these guys, but if you haven't do yourself a favor. Not every album is included so dig around and find the rest if you love it, but these are just some of my all time favorites.
Blonde Redhead is analternative rockband originating from New York City in the early 1990s. It was formed byKazu Makino, Maki Takahashi and Milan-born Italian twin brothers Simone Pace andAmedeo Pace. They take their name from a song byDNA, a 70s and 80s no-wave band from New York. Blonde Redhead caught the attention ofSonic Youth’s drummer,Steve Shelley, who produced their first self titled album in 1993. Shortly afterwards Maki Takahashi left the band and the remaining band members continued as a trio. Such an amazing band, if you haven't checked these guys out by now I feel sorry for your ears. Get all of these albums now.
Starflyer 59 is ashoegazeband from Riverside, CA founded in 1993 by Jason Martin, brother of Ronnie Martin ofJoy Electric. While Martin has written all of Starflyer 59’s songs, the band has included a number of different musicians over the years, includingJeff Cloud,Richard Swift,Frank LenzandJosh Dooley. Shortly afterwards, Ebel contacted Martin and offered him a record contract. Great shoegaze band. They have a ton of albums that you should check out, but I'm gonna post my all time favorite.
Clikatat Ikatowi was one of San Diego’s most celebrated bands. They helped maintain the city as the art punk capital of world. They created twisted yet naturally flowing works in a broad range of styles. Ranging from lightning fast and huge, to stripped down, spacey, and lethargic, Clikatat’s songs were always engaging and mesmerizing. It wasn’t just their excellent compositions which made them everyone’s favorite band but also their superior musicianship. Just recently discovered these guys and I can't stop listening. If your into Antioch Arrow kinda stuff check these guys out now.
LSD and the Search for God is a shoegaze/noise-rock band from San Francisco, California formed in 2006. They have sadly released only one self titled EP. Really really good new shoegaze. Hopefully these guys will be putting some new stuff out one of these days. To be honest I'm not even sure if they still play, but either way, make sure to get this amazing EP.
At the Drive-In were a post-hardcore band, from El Paso, TX, USA. They formed in 1993 & disbanded in 2001. Influenced primarily by the likes of Fugazi & Drive Like Jehu, as well as the Texan hardcore scene. At the Drive-In crafted epic, eclectic songs, laced with cryptic & strongly metaphorical lyrics. One of the greatest bands of all time. After At the Drive-In members went on to create The Mars Volta, another amazing band. One of my all time favorite bands, such awesome and original music, if you haven't heard these guys yet, do yourself a favor and get everything posted.
The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in May 2004. Their name derives from the Velvet Underground song “ The Black Angel’s Death Song." This band is really awesome, sometimes you can get a Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators kinda vibe from these guys. Sit back and dig these record. It'll be hard not to.
Deerhunter is a band which formed in 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia. The group began with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with a pinch of garage rock. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized, and have been referred to by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.” This band is hands down amazing. If you haven't check these guys out yet, do it!
Múm (pronounced [muːm], “moom”) is an experimental electronic group from Iceland whose music is characterized by soft vocals, eccentric beats and colorful effects, and a variety of traditional and unconventional instruments. The band was formed in 1997. Originally a duo, the band has expanded and contracted in the 12 years of being and has counted 15 - 20 people along the way. My girlfriend showed me this band and they blew me away. If your into Blonde Redhead, you'll probably dig Múm. Check these guys out, really interesting music. Warning you may feel the urge to shed a few tears, in a good way.
Up from the warm, almost oppressively humid Texas air rises a din. The sound is created by only three people. For now, we’ll just call them D.H., Nikki and Slim. The music that they are creating might be the aural equivalent of walking down a farm-to-market road on a foggy morning just before day breaks. The clamor began in November 2007 when these three humans came together to form True Widow. Really awesome band, check these guys out, you won't be dissapointed.
Yo La Tengo is an Americanindie rock band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984. Despite achieving limited mainstream success, Yo La Tengo has been called “the quintessential critics’ band” and maintain a strong cult following. Yo La Tengo is an awesome band, they make you feel good inside, check these guys out.
The Verve (originally Verve) is an English alternative rock band. The band was formed in 1989 at Winstanley College, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, by vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. The Verve was psychedelic music indebted to space rock and shoegazer music before them. I remember hearing Bittersweet Symphony when I was like 5 years old driving around with my uncle, brings back so many good memories of when life was so much easier. Do yourself a favor, get these albums, feel a little nostalgic.
Drawing upon the collective approaches and musical output of bands like The Dead C, Wire, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, Loomer bring together elements of harsh volume, and wall-of-noise guitars with understated ethereal vocals, to create an artfully intense exploration into new grounds in song form and harmonic density. Just found these guys and have fallen in love. Really good modern shoegaze, check these guys out.
The Telescopes were formed in 1987 by Stephen Lawrie and could best be described as a noise/space rock band - The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 being influences and contemporaries. Give this band a listen, I just recently discovered them, better late then never.
