The Black Artists Group (BAG) was a collective of jazz musicians as well as dancers, poets, and other artists formed in St. Louis, Missouri. Their music recordings would fall under the umbrella of avant-garde and free jazz. The collective was active from 1968 until the early 70’s, but in the early 70’s they relocated to Paris, and then again to New York. After splitting up, many of the musicians were still active in the New York music scene. Three of the saxophone players (Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Hamiet Bluiett) would later form the World Saxophone Quartet.
The Nation Of Ulysses was a post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. Musically and stylistically, The Nation Of Ulysses had a tremendous influence on the underground punk rock and hardcore music scene in the early 90’s. Their music was noisy and manic, but they also had a strong free-jazz influence. The band was also notorious for their political pamphlets, called Ulysses Speaks, which they distributed at live shows, some of which are reproduced on their album covers. Their pamphlets espoused what they referred to as “The Ulysses Aesthetic” which was a mix of 60’s and 70’s radical politics, French Situationist writings, and juvenile delinquency. The group advocated a rejection of the 60’s and 70’s music and styling; rejecting drug use, and advocating that the punk youth dress nicely and sensibly. While this might seem to be a trivial point, it should be noted that not long after the Nation Of Ulysses toured the USA, the fashion sensibility of the post-hardcore scene, did indeed, change quite considerably, and this was a precursor to the thrift store chic fashion sensibility of the 90’s. AMAZING BAND, get into it.
The Art Ensemble of Chicago is an avant-garde jazzensemble closely identified with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the mid 1960s. The group continues to tour and record through 2006, despite the deaths of two of the founding members. The Art Ensemble embodied the AACM motto “Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future” with their use of costumes and face paint in performance plus the adventurous improvisation, the use of folk music and instruments, swing, and a variety of musical expression that made them hard to pin down to a specific genre. The listener is engaged by the Ensemble’s multi-instrumentalism, especially the use of what they term “little instruments” in addition to the traditional jazz lineup; “little instruments” can include bicycle horns, bells, birthday party noisemakers, wind chimes, and a vast array of percussion instruments (including found objects). Truly beautifully played jazz.
I Am Above On The Left is an experimentalrockquartet established in Moscow, Russia in Autumn 2004, and soon became one of the most welcomed experimental rock-act of a new local music scene. The band plays loud and noisy, mostly instrumental music, blending influences of art-jazz-nova-hardcore, pop-noise, math-rock, and avant-garde. The young musicians say that their efforts are devoted to “rethinking themselves at every single moment of time." These guys do what they do very well, give these guys a listen.
