Starflyer 59 is ashoegazeband from Riverside, CA founded in 1993 by Jason Martin, brother of Ronnie Martin ofJoy Electric. While Martin has written all of Starflyer 59’s songs, the band has included a number of different musicians over the years, includingJeff Cloud,Richard Swift,Frank LenzandJosh Dooley. Starflyer 59 was signed to Tooth & Nail Records, their original and current label, after Jason Martin gave a demo toBrandon Ebelwhen the two met at a music festival in 1993. Shortly afterwards, Ebel contacted Martin and offered him a record contract. Great shoegaze band. They have a ton of albums that you should check out, but I'm gonna post my all time favorite.
The band formed in 2004 and is named after a Club in New York in the 60`s, where Nico (Velvet Underground) had her first solo performances. The Blue Angel Lounge always loves music or art in general, so it was a privilege to make good music only for themselves. Now they would like to share their music and ideas with people they Love and Respect. Really good psychedelic shoegaze.
FUCKEDBYLIFE is my solo project. It was created during times strugging with heroin addiction, getting clean, getting dumped and finding love and sobriety. Check out the bandcamp ...
LSD and the Search for God is a shoegaze/noise-rock band from San Francisco, California formed in 2006. They have sadly released only one self titled EP. Really really good new shoegaze. Hopefully these guys will be putting some new stuff out one of these days. To be honest I'm not even sure if they still play, but either way, make sure to get this amazing EP.
Astrobrite is shoegazenoise-pop supergroup project from the musician Scott Cortez (Of Star and Lovesliescrushing fame). Astrobrite began in 1994 as a solo project and in 1995 the band expanded in order to tour. Astrobrite played their last show in 1997 and went on hiatus. Super lo-fi shoegaze band. Check these guys out if your into my bloody valentine worship :)
Ghastly City Sleep combine the finest elements of shoegaze and ambience along with an acute penchant for melody to create an absolutely stunning array of material. The four young men involved in Ghastly City Sleep don’t keep to one instrument long, as the entire collective can be found playing everything from guitars, keys, various percussion and just about everything in between. The group was formed, back in 2005 after transplanting from Richmond, VA to Brooklyn, NY, with current & former members of City of Caterpillar, Gregor Samsa, and Majority Rule. Sadly I missed these guys when they played in Los Angeles, but I love their music, give them a listen.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The band has had over 40 members since then, but its driving force and main songwriter is Anton Newcombe. Their sound is heavily influenced by the psychedelic sounds of the 1960s, but also carries influences from shoegaze, jangle pop, garage rock, and lo-fi sonorities. Over its decade-long history, the band has undergone a large number of personnel changes. Multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter Anton Newcombe is the only member who has stayed with the Brian Jonestown Massacre since its beginning. This is one of my favorite bands of all time. They make some of the greatest music that has ever graced my ears and no matter how many times I listen to them it just never gets old to me. Last year I got the chance to see them live in Los Angeles and they played over two hours of what became one of the greatest shows of my life. I have laughed, I have cried, I have felt numb and so much more to this brilliant band. Do yourself a favor and pleasure your ears with what some like to call the BJM, love. They have so many albums/singles/ep's, so if you want them all then dig around yourself, but here are all my favorites.
The Verve (originally Verve) is an English alternative rock band. The band was formed in 1989 at Winstanley College, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, by vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. The Verve was psychedelic music indebted to space rock and shoegazer music before them. I remember hearing Bittersweet Symphony when I was like 5 years old driving around with my uncle, brings back so many good memories of when life was so much easier. Do yourself a favor, get these albums, feel a little nostalgic.
Drawing upon the collective approaches and musical output of bands like The Dead C, Wire, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, Loomer bring together elements of harsh volume, and wall-of-noise guitars with understated ethereal vocals, to create an artfully intense exploration into new grounds in song form and harmonic density. Just found these guys and have fallen in love. Really good modern shoegaze, check these guys out.
The Telescopes were formed in 1987 by Stephen Lawrie and could best be described as a noise/space rock band - The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 being influences and contemporaries. Give this band a listen, I just recently discovered them, better late then never.
Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, they have released records on Hydra Head, Reproductive and Relapse in the US and Undergroove in the UK. Individually and as a band they have worked with bands such as Isis and Twin Zero. The band share a lot of aspects musically with shoegaze and post-rock but are equally adept producing all sorts of rock, indie, trip-hop and pop sounds.
Autumn’s Grey Solace features the talents of Erin Welton (vocals, lyrics, keyboards), and Scott Ferrell (guitars, mandolin, drums, percussion). Together, the duo create haunting, ethereal soundscapes, using layered guitars and soft vocals. The band was formed in Florida in 2000. Truly haunting shoegaze/darkwave. Dig it
Slowdive was a dream pop / shoegaze band formed in 1989, lasting until 1995. The band was formed in Reading, Berkshire, England and signed to Creation Records in the UK. The band’s sound was influenced by the Cocteau Twins and Creation label mates My Bloody Valentine, featuring heavy use of guitar effects and muted vocals. This is one of my all time favorite bands. It seems everyone I know only has Souvlaki, which is an amazing album, but all their other material is amazing as well. Do yourself a favor and download everything by this wonderful band.
