So here we have Purple Mercy, still an active band I believe. I can't find any info on this band, but I'm pretty sure they're from Santa Cruz, CA. Purple Mercy play psychedelic punk / hardcore / sludge music. The first time I listened to this album was on shrooms. The trip was horrible, but the album sounded great. Check these guys out I'm pretty sure someone from Sabertooth Zombie is in this band, but they sound nothing like them.
Gang of Four were a British post-punk group from Leeds, England. Original personnel were singer Jon King, guitarist Andy Gill, bass guitarist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham. They were fully active from 1977 to 1984, and then re-emerged twice in the 1990s with King and Gill. In 2005, the original lineup reunited. Gang of Four play very awesome post punk new wave jams with a sound like no one else. Give these guys a listen.
The Nation Of Ulysses was a post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. Musically and stylistically, The Nation Of Ulysses had a tremendous influence on the underground punk rock and hardcore music scene in the early 90’s. Their music was noisy and manic, but they also had a strong free-jazz influence. The band was also notorious for their political pamphlets, called Ulysses Speaks, which they distributed at live shows, some of which are reproduced on their album covers. Their pamphlets espoused what they referred to as “The Ulysses Aesthetic” which was a mix of 60’s and 70’s radical politics, French Situationist writings, and juvenile delinquency. The group advocated a rejection of the 60’s and 70’s music and styling; rejecting drug use, and advocating that the punk youth dress nicely and sensibly. While this might seem to be a trivial point, it should be noted that not long after the Nation Of Ulysses toured the USA, the fashion sensibility of the post-hardcore scene, did indeed, change quite considerably, and this was a precursor to the thrift store chic fashion sensibility of the 90’s. AMAZING BAND, get into it.
Alpinist is a Dark-Hardcore/Crust four-piece band from Münster, GERMANY. They exist since winter 2006 and live from the experiences their members made playing in bands from death metal to punkrock. Alpinist is meant to be understood by those who are sick of people following musical trends, those who wanna live out music with dedication and those who believe in expressing their own ideals with their own art. Really awesome band, these guys are so good. Check them out.
Hatred Surge is a power violence band from Austin, Texas. Alex Hughes, former bassist of Insect Warfare, is the founding member. The band started with Alex playing every instrument and it eventually turned into a full band. Every album they put out seems to go in a little different of a direction. They had a female vocalist until their last split with Mammoth Grinder where the old singer of Insect Warfare stepped in and took over the vocal duties. One of my all time favorite power violence bands. If your into PV and for some odd reason haven't heard these guys, get on it.
Some Girls was a five-piece hardcore punk band from San Diego, active from 2002 to 2007, consisting of members from a variety of influential hardcore bands. Every album they made is a little different from the last, but they all are amazing. I had to chance to become good friends with all these guys and got to follow them around and film a bunch of their shows. If you never had the chance to see these guys live, I'm sorry, but you really missed out. Below are links to every album they made and a live video I filmed of them near the ending of their existence. One of my favorite bands of all time, these guys really hit the spot for me. Make sure to look up their lyrics as well, Wes Eisold has a way with words that I can't help but love.

Some Girls live at the Knitting Factory: Shot by me
Scholastic Deth was a straight-edge thrashcore/powerviolence band from the San Francisco Bay area. They had a sound which differed from many of their peers, which seemed to take a lot of qualities from old-school hardcore, creating fast, fun and positive music with a message. This message dealt with everything from skateboarding, the love of coffee and life as a nerd, to the lack of substance and political awareness in hardcore today, problems and calling people on their shit within DIY subculture and the hypocrisy surrounding punks bidding on a 2oz piece of vinyl on a corporate auction site. One of the best powerviolence bands ever. Get this.
Pissed Happy Children was an influential hardcore punk band from Claremont, California whose members had previously been in Peace Corpse and Pillsbury Hardcore. They would later go on to form other bands in the powerviolence and noise genres including: Cyclops, Neanderthal, Charred Remains, Man Is the Bastard and Bastard Noise.
Here's another band that I had the opportunity to become close friends with and play along side. The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower is jazz meets punk in the best way possible. Another band that sounds like no one else. Sex, sass, and homoerotic live performances all thrown into one. Another one of my favorite bands. Here's pretty much everything by them. Sadly Willy Graves, their wonderful bass player passed away not too long ago. May you rest in peace, I love you Willy.
One of the hardest working bands around. They will pummel you with their volume, rattle your skull with their intensity, boggle your mind with their precision and generally fill your heart with glee. An amazing blend of East Coast and West Coast post punk that will remind you of Fugazi, Rites of Spring and Drive Like Jehu. I believe some members came or went to/from Yaphet Kotto.
Neurosis is an experimentalmetal band, based in Oakland, CA. Their unique sound draws from influences ranging from hardcore punk and doom metal to dark ambient, progressive rock and industrial music as well as incorporating elements of post-punkand folk music. The band is highly regarded as the primary pioneer of its genre, sometimes referred to as either atmospheric sludge or post-metal. These are the soundtracks of the apocalypse, don't pass these up, especially Through Silver and Blood.
Jenny Piccolo were a 3 piece band from Santa Cruz, CA, active in the late 90s. It featured members of Mohinder and Makara, who later went on to form The Anasazi and Yaphet Kotto.
Doomed punk band The Festival of Dead Deer. They were great because the noise they made could melt steel and boil blood, and they were doomed because they reared up fast, spat out beautiful music, then vanished into the ether. Threeoneg gold.
