Saetia

Saetia was a  band from New York City that formed in early 1997. Their first show was at ABC No Rio to about thirty people. Two and a half years, 17 songs, numerous tours and four bass players later, Saetia played their final show at ABC No Rio to forty people. One of the greatest screamo bands of all time, these guys set the foundation for bands to come. If you've never heard these guys, crawl out of your shell and give them a chance. If you dig awesome 90's screamo I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The Secret

The Secret was born in Trieste, Italy in 2003. Their sound combines elements of hardcore, noise, metal, and post rock to create a dark, heavy yet dynamic sound topped by the noir and cryptic atmospheres of the lyrics. The Secret’s music is a complex and intense stream of consciousness which drives the listener through unexpected soundscapes. There are polyrhythmic breakdowns, dark atmospheric passages, and heavy mosh part blended with surgical precision. Heavy, fast and awesome. Don't pass these guys up.

Sozialistisches Patienten Kollektiv

Formed 1978 in Australia, was a 1980s  and  music act once featuring Graeme Revell who later went on to compose soundtracks for film and television, most notably the incidental music for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The group was formed when Revell (aka Operator) met up with Neil Hill (aka Ne/H/il). They were both working at a psychiatric hospital when they became inspired by the manifesto of the German radical Marxist group known as the Sozialistisches Patienten Kollektiv (SPK). SPK’s early music is best described as disturbing and psychologically disorienting, in line with their nihilistic, subversive philosophy. The project ideal is to express the content of various psycho-pathalogical conditions, especially schizophrenia, manic - depressive psychosis, mental retardation and paranoia. SPK is trying to be a voice for those individuals condemned to the slow decay of mental hospitals and chemical / electro / surgical therapy, without fetishising them into blatant entertainment product. NOISE.

The Telescopes

The Telescopes were formed in 1987 by Stephen Lawrie and could best be described as a / band - The Jesus and Mary ChainMy Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3 being influences and contemporaries. Give this band a listen, I just recently discovered them, better late then never.

The Cranberries

The Cranberries are an  band from Limerick, Ireland that formed in 1989 and rose to mainstream popularity in the early 1990’s. Combining the melodic jangle of post-The Smiths indie pop with the lilting, trance-inducing sonic textures of late-80s  and adding a slight Celtic tint, The Cranberries became one of the more successful groups to emerge from the pre-Britpop UK indie scene of the early 90s. Such an amazing band. Do yourself a favor, get this greatest hits album.

Yaphet Kotto

Emotive Hardcore band from Santa Cruz, and then San Francisco, California. Active from 1996-2005. One of the greatest screamo bands of all time. I almost got the chance to see them a few years back, but they ended up not playing cause their singer got too drunk, one of the biggest bummers of my life. If you have never listened to this band, do yourself a favor and get everything they have ever created.

Autumn's Grey Solace

Autumn’s Grey Solace features the talents of Erin Welton (vocals, lyrics, keyboards), and Scott Ferrell (guitars, mandolin, drums, percussion). Slowdive

Slowdive was a  /  band formed in 1989, lasting until 1995. The band was formed in Reading, Berkshire, England and signed to Creation Records in the UK. The band’s sound was influenced by the Cocteau Twins and Creation label mates My Bloody Valentine, featuring heavy use of guitar effects and muted vocals. This is one of my all time favorite bands. It seems everyone I know only has Souvlaki, which is an amazing album, but all their other material is amazing as well. Do yourself a favor and download everything by this wonderful band.

Yume Bitsu

Yume Bitsu (meaning “dream beats” in Japanese), is a psychedelic post rock band. Most of the band members live along the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Very beautiful album. Unlike many other post rock bands Yume Bitsu throw in a bit of vocals and it sounds great. Lots of beautiful noise coming from this album. Put on a good set of headphones, go to a park, close your eyes and enjoy.

TUNE IN

The Beta Band

The Beta Band (1996-2004) were an alternative rock group from Edinburgh, Scotland who received much critical acclaim and achieved cult status, but failed to make much of a commercial impact on the popular music scene. Their style was self-described as being , a blend of , and  jamming.

RELAX

Scholastic Deth

Scholastic Deth was a straight-edge thrashcore/powerviolence band from the San Francisco Bay area. They had a sound which differed from many of their peers, which seemed to take a lot of qualities from old-school hardcore, creating fast, fun and positive music with a message. This message dealt with everything from skateboarding, the love of coffee and life as a nerd, to the lack of substance and political awareness in hardcore today, problems and calling people on their shit within DIY subculture and the hypocrisy surrounding punks bidding on a 2oz piece of vinyl on a corporate auction site. One of the best powerviolence bands ever. Get this.

POWERVIOLENCE

Akbar

So I can't find any real info on this guy, but Akbar raps about some real ass shit. The universe, the third eye, using your full human potential, eating your greens, getting away from television are just some of the many topics Akbar gets into. Really good underground shit, fuck the mainstream. This is real hip-hop.

Index For Potential Suicide

Index for Potential Suicide was formed in the summer of 1998 in Charleston, SC by Christopher Ashley of the noise/hardcore band Murder Weapon and Brian Cooper, Robert Findlater and Frank Whiteside of Intentional Resentment. The four’s love for noise and experimental music was the foundation for the band’s early material. As an experimental band with drum machines, samplers, synths, trumpet, etc. Below is their discography. They have a very early 90's screamo sound to them, but keep it original with all the other noise they throw into the mix. Check these guys out.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Godspeed You! Black Emperor are a Canadian band based in Montreal, Quebec. Formed in 1994 in Montreal, Canada, the band has been highly influential within the  genre. Working with orchestrated arrangements, the nine-piece group created tracks with wide dynamic ranges, a highly evocative use of instrumentation and sounds and uncompromising long form compositions. Their engrossing use of art and visuals in both album packaging and live performances creates an enigmatic aura. Beautiful music.
