Pig Destroyer

Pig Destroyer is a grindcore band based in Virginia, USA first formed in 1997. Combining old school grindcore with doom and thrash elements, Pig Destroyer have pushed the boundaries of the grind genre and gained a large following. Their unique sound is notable for its absence of bass guitar on their studio albums. One of the best grindcore bands of all time. Turn this shit all the way up and let your ears bleed.

A Lily

James Vella, here working as the multi tasking lone personnel of A Lily, is also known for his work as guitarist/composer for the British post-classical/indie band yndi halda and as the owner of the O Rosa Records label. Very soothing & sweet, organic laptop-based music. Another one to just go outside, lay in the sun, close your eyes and zone out to. This album is in two parts, so make sure to get both.

Jeru The Damaja

He spent his early years in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York, where he has been rapping at block parties since the early days of his youth. He first showcased his hardcore Brooklyn style to audiences on “I’m the Man,” a track from Gang Starr’s 1992 album Daily Operation. His first album, The Sun Rises In The East, released in 1994, and produced entirely by DJ Premier, is considered a classic, and was one of the most acclaimed Hip Hop albums of its time. A classic album that must be heard, get this.

Hewhocorrupts

Hewhocorrupts is a Chicago-based grindcore band most known for their songs mocking Metallica, making reference to the notorious allegations of the group having sold out. This jab of satire is carried through the entire band's style. Their own site refers to them as "Hewhocorrupts Megacorp.", and they appear in a costume of business suits and aviator sunglasses informally known as "hardcorporate". Members of the band were in the power violence/grindcore band Kungfu Rick and in Authority Abuse.  I had the privledge of seeing these guys once in Indiana and they ruled. This is a collection of basically everything up to the point of it's release. Awesome grindcore, guns and roses covers, get this shit.

Frank Fairfield

Fairfield, a street musician who plays banjo, fiddle, and guitar and sings traditional folk songs as you would imagine they were sung when they were first written, is only just getting used to the idea of playing music venues alongside rock musicians. He is skilled at acoustic guitar, fiddle, and the clawhammer style of banjo; and when he performs it’s as if he channels some old mountain man or backporch country blues singer from the early 1900’s. Really awesome stuff, check this out.

Art Ensemble of Chicago

The Art Ensemble of Chicago is an  ensemble closely identified with the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in the mid 1960s. The group continues to tour and record through 2006, despite the deaths of two of the founding members. The Art Ensemble embodied the AACM motto “Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future” with their use of costumes and face paint in performance plus the adventurous improvisation, the use of folk music and instruments, swing, and a variety of musical expression that made them hard to pin down to a specific genre. The listener is engaged by the Ensemble’s multi-instrumentalism, especially the use of what they term “little instruments” in addition to the traditional  lineup; “little instruments” can include bicycle horns, bells, birthday party noisemakers, wind chimes, and a vast array of percussion instruments (including found objects). Truly beautifully played jazz.

Alias

Alias found no music that captivated him until at age 13 when he saw “Yo MTV Raps.” Alone in his interest in hip hop, alias sought to immerse himself in this foreign counter-culture. He bought The Source monthly at the one shop in Maine that carried it, and by age 14 he was writing his own raps. In ‘98 during the deep puddle dynamics sessions in Minneapolis with Slug, dose and sole, alias realized that music would be his life’s work. Really really good hip hop with some ill beats to go along with Alias's words of wisdom.

Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada is an electronic music duo from Edinburgh, Scotland. Boards of Canada have had an enormous influence on the  and  scenes. They have frequently made reference to the warm, scratchy, artificial sounds of 1970s television. Indeed, the Sandison brothers admit to being inspired by the documentary films of the National Film Board of Canada, from which they take their name. Boards of Canada is an amazing band. Download everything find a peaceful place to sit, put on some good headphones, close your eyes, and sink deep into the sounds of Boards of Canada.

Xiu Xiu

Xiu Xiu is an  band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn. The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film “Tian yu” (a.k.a. “Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl”). Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of  Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Xiu Xiu is an aquired taste for most, but give it a chance. Read their lyrics and let Jamie touch your soul, then rip out your heart. Truly beautiful poetry as music.

BK-One

BK-One’s love of music has been a lifelong affair. From an early age, he studied classical piano and jazz theory, taught himself to play the vibraphone, and began collecting records. In 2009 BK recorded his first solo album, “Rádio Do Canibal” with Benzilla. With music drawn entirely from records collected on a recent visit to Brazil, “Rádio do Canibal” features artists like Black ThoughtScarfaceRaekwonSlugMursThe Hypnotic Brass EnsemblePhonteThe Grouch, and of course Brother Ali. BK’s years of experience in different styles of music shine through on this album, as he collaborates with rappers, jazz musicians, and singers alike. This album is ill, get it.

Hatred Surge

Hatred Surge is a  band from Austin, Texas. Alex Hughes, former bassist of Insect Warfare, is the founding member. The band started with Alex playing every instrument and it eventually turned into a full band. Every album they put out seems to go in a little different of a direction. They had a female vocalist until their last split with Mammoth Grinder where the old singer of Insect Warfare stepped in and took over the vocal duties. One of my all time favorite power violence bands. If your into PV and for some odd reason haven't  heard these guys, get on it.

13th Floor Elevators

Hailing from Austin, Texas, the members of 13th Floor Elevators were quite possibly the first artists to describe their music as psychedelic. Their lyrics and sleeve notes openly and religiously endorsed the use of drugs (particularly ) to alter human consciousness for the better. This band rules. If your into the 60's psychedelic sound, get this immediately. Tune in, drop out.

Gérard Grisey

Gérard Grisey (born 1946; died November 11, 1998) was a French composer of contemporary music. He studied with Olivier Messiaen at the Conservatoire of Paris, where he obtained the Prix de Rome. His music is often considered to belong to the genre of  music, although he later disowned the label in interviews and writings. Nonetheless, he spent much of his career exploring the spectrum of tone colour between harmonic overtones and noise. In addition, he was fascinated by musical processes which unfold slowly, and he made musical time a major element of many of his pieces. Truly beautiful work, give this masterpiece a listen.
