Head Wound City

Head Wound City are a hardcore supergroup consisting of Jordan Blilie and Cody Votolato of Blood Brothers, Nick Zinner from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Justin Pearson and Gabe Serbian, both from The Locust and Holy Molar. Jordan does the singing. Gabe plays drums. Cody does guitar stuff. So does Nick. JP plays bass. Most everybody sings along. They’ve been in some of the bands that have burned out the backs of your eyeballs, Yeah Yeah Yeahing you into a jitter sex frenzy, Locusting your flesh down to bare white bones, and spurting Blood Brothers all over your clean white sheets. Such an awesome short lived band. They made one record, played one show and that was it. Get this record NOW!

I WANNA KILL!

Black Artists Group

The Black Artists Group (BAG) was a collective of jazz musicians as well as dancers, poets, and other artists formed in St. Louis, Missouri. Their music recordings would fall under the umbrella of avant-garde and free jazz. The collective was active from 1968 until the early 70’s, but in the early 70’s they relocated to Paris, and then again to New York. After splitting up, many of the musicians were still active in the New York music scene. Three of the saxophone players (Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Hamiet Bluiett) would later form the World Saxophone Quartet.

BEAUTIFUL JAZZ

Love Life

The Baltimore quartet, Love Life, featured ex-members of Jaks, Universal Order Of Armageddon and The Great Unraveling. Their uniquely raw,  infused  often utilized odd time signatures, driving bass, multi-layered arrangements featuring organs, horns, and strings, and most notably Katrina Ford’s sinister, guttural voice and lyrics. Their sound earned them frequent comparisons to artists like The Birthday Party, Diamanda Galas, The Jesus Lizard, Swans, and early Pere Ubu. In 2004, Love Life broke up, with Katrina Ford, Sean Antanaitis, and drummer David Bergander forming the post-punk cabaret trio, Celebration, and bassist Anthony Malat going on to form Bellmer Dolls.

CHECK IT OUT

Musica Elettronica Viva

Musica Elettronica Viva could not be easily defined as one band. Instead, MEV was closer to a movement based around the idea of free improvisation in the form of experimental, electronic jazz. In the early ’70s, there were three different (but related) bands that went by the name: one in New York that included Richard Teitelbaum and Frederic Rzewski; one in Paris, led by Patricia and Ivan Coaquette (before his Spacecraft days); and one in Rome, founded by Alvin Curran. They were early experimenters with the use of synthesizers to transform sounds. They also used such “non-musical” objects as amplified panes of glass and olive oil cans, and their performances achieved notoriety in Italy for their ability to generate riots. Really good noise, check this stuff out if your into that kinda stuff.

NOISE NOISE NOISE

The Out Crowd

Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Matt Hollywood, the former co-songwriter and co-founder of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, fans of mid-’60s Kinks, Stones, and Byrds will fall in love with The Out Crowd’s edgy and infectious pop sound, heightened by Dandy Warhols’ producer Gregg Willliams’ immaculate production. The Big Takeover raves: “Portland, OR’s Out Crowd makes music that reaches for the sky, going for those heavenly ideas just out of reach.Building off the great Psych foundations of LA pop, (Byrds, Love, Rain Parade,) one moment and a Stonesy Velvets base the next, they push themselves to the creative max, with a sound that is always clean and aggressive. But don’t think its urgent-style Punk, instead its Rock from a bunch who remain in control even as they go for broke. Really cool stuff check this out.

Bucket Full of Teeth

Formed in Early 2001 by Brad Wallace and Will Killingsworth, both former members of Orchid, Bucket Full of Teeth was conceived as a friendly venture in playing generic powerviolence but instantaneosly evolved into much more. The band quickly become more interested in pushing conventions of heavy music and punk rock. Having only played 6 shows ever, and primarily a studio project, Bucket Full of Teeth began work on new material in 2002. Fusing elements of Death Metal, Ambient, Psychedlic, Prog, Thrash and Stoner Rock into a cohesive whole much better serving the original musical thesis attempted in their early recordings. Self-Recorded and painstakingly edited and revised at Dead Air Studios over the past two years Bucket Full of Teeth have produced a collage of sonic destruction both heavy and unpredictable. The band has said this will be their final release but rumors of working on new material and live incarnations surface often.

AMAZING

Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth is an influential  band which formed in New York City, New York, United States in 1981. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals, guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Steve Shelley (drums) and Mark Ibold (bass). In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. One of the greatest bands of all time, I'm sure you've heard of these guys, but if you haven't do yourself a favor. Not every album is included so dig around and find the rest if you love it, but these are just some of my all time favorites.

Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead is an  band originating from New York City in the early 1990s. It was formed by Kazu Makino, Maki Takahashi and Milan-born Italian twin brothers Simone Pace and Amedeo Pace. They take their name from a song by DNA, a 70s and 80s no-wave band from New York. Blonde Redhead caught the attention of Sonic Youth’s drummer, Steve Shelley, who produced their first self titled album in 1993. Shortly afterwards Maki Takahashi left the band and the remaining band members continued as a trio. Such an amazing band, if you haven't checked these guys out by now I feel sorry for your ears. Get all of these albums now.

Swing Kids

Swing Kids were a hardcore band from San Diego California during the mid 1990s. The band members were Eric Allen (of Unbroken), Jose Palafox (of Struggle and Bread and Circuits), John Brady (of Spanakorzo and Sweep The Leg Johnny), Jimmy LaVelle (The Album Leaf) and frontman Justin Pearson (later of The Locust), who would release their recordings on his own Three One G record label. They were closely involved with and heavily influenced by the forerunners of the San Diego hardcore punk scene of the 1990s. I got the chance to catch these guys reunion show recently and was blown away. Starflyer 59

Starflyer 59 is a  band from Riverside, CA founded in 1993 by Jason Martin, brother of Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric. While Martin has written all of Starflyer 59’s songs, the band has included a number of different musicians over the years, including Jeff Cloud, Richard Swift, Frank Lenz and Josh DooleyStarflyer 59 was signed to Tooth & Nail Records, their original and current label, after Jason Martin gave a demo to Brandon Ebel when the two met at a music festival in 1993. Shortly afterwards, Ebel contacted Martin and offered him a record contract. Great shoegaze band. They have a ton of albums that you should check out, but I'm gonna post my all time favorite.
